Often overlooked as a prime hunting destination, the Free State Province in South Africa offers some of the finest wing shooting grounds for endemic species.
However, ensuring the continued success of this unique hunting experience requires careful planning, well-curated hunting packages and strict adherence to the hunting regulations of the region.
Thanks to the experience of professional hunters and their unique knowledge of the weather patterns and seasons of the region, they are able to narrow down the well-known locations of bird species on offer.
While shooting from strategically placed hides have proven effective, trekking through open fields while wing shooting alongside well-trained German Pointers remains a classic hunting experience.
The shotguns of choice for terrestrial game birds and waterfowl are Over-Under or Side-by-Side shotguns in either 12 or 20 gauge.
For pigeon shooting, semi-automatic are the better option.
Hunters are welcome to import their own firearms for their hunts, or hire from a fine selection of rifles and shotguns on offer. Some additional costs are applicable for either option.
We are mindful that travelling with ammunition can add unnecessary weight to a traveler's luggage, we therefore keep an abundant supply of most standard ammunition possibly required on hand.
Accommodation at the Van Rooyen family’s Glen Guinea Lodge offers a blend of luxury living and a traditional farm stay, and offers all the comforts guests could need on icy nights in the notoriously cold Free State winter.
